Should You Be Using AI or Human-Written Content?

Learn the best way forward for SEO in the age of AI

Hey there SEOpreneurs!

Welcome to this edition of our newsletter.

In today's issue, we will be diving into the topic of AI content versus human content for SEO.

Artificial intelligence has been a buzzword for decades, but with recent technological breakthroughs, it's becoming more prevalent in everything we do, especially in business. One such development is OpenAI's ChatGPT, which has been hailed as "the future of search" and a "game-changer" for businesses that rely on written content and language processing.

You’ve all heard about ChatGPT, and of that, I have no doubt. AI is the future. It’s the next big thing after the invention of the internet.

But what does this mean for the future of SEO? That’s the question I have been asking myself these last few months.

Am I out of a job? Do I have to pivot to something else? Will people stop searching for information and clicking on web pages and links?

The answers are still a bit unclear, but what in life is certain anyways (besides death and taxes)?

So for right now, we pivot and use AI's advantages. But are we being penalized for taking these “shortcuts”?

And then the most important question — should we be relying on AI-generated content or sticking with human-written content? In this newsletter, we will discuss the pros and cons of both approaches and provide insights into why this topic matters to you as a reader.

We'll also explore why most people fail at incorporating AI content into their SEO strategy and offer practical tips for success.

AI Content Versus Human Content

Let’s dive into AI and human content to see a few differences.

Introducing AI Content

The content marketing realm is vast, and numerous AI content generators are available, including well-known platforms like ZimmWriter, Jasper, Copysmith, Writesonic, CopyAI, and ChatGPT. These web-based AI systems are trained on millions of words, enabling them to produce original, coherent, and cohesive content.

For example, ChatGPT utilizes a deep neural network with self-attention mechanisms to process input data, learning the patterns and structure of human conversations. This capacity enables it to generate human-like responses to questions, from short social media posts to multi-page essays.

All you need to do is ask the right questions, and these AI generators spit out information in droves. However, it is usually generic information that reads like a technical manual. AI-generated content is great for filling in the space but not great at establishing a connection with a human reader.

Human-written Content

This brings us to human-written content.

As we stand at the forefront of an era dominated by highly intelligent machines, we must ask ourselves: what sets us apart from lines of code designed to mimic intricate neural structures? What makes us unique?

Have you ever been awestruck by a masterpiece or moved to tears by a melody? Have you felt inspired after reading a novel or watching a movie? These experiences stem from our inherent human creativity, a product of the harmonious interaction of various networks within our brains.

This attribute enables humans to generate innovative ideas and imagine scenarios that have never happened before. Unlike AI, humans can leverage their creativity to produce truly original, engaging content tailored to a specific audience.

At our core, humans seek connection with others, a trait consumers and businesses share. We all desire to be understood, and we want the writer to somehow ease our pain or make our lives easier, simpler, faster, or better.

While AI systems like ChatGPT can make data-driven decisions and generate endless content, they cannot effectively convey a brand's distinctive vision and tone nor form genuine connections with the target audience.

No digital tool, no matter how sophisticated, can fully grasp the complexities of emotional intelligence. In contrast, humans can empathetically tailor content, crafting personalized customer experiences that foster brand loyalty.

However…

AI Content Offers Greater Cost-Effectiveness than Human-Generated Content

The expense of creating an article, video, or other text-based content varies depending on its complexity and length. Generally, producing articles costs less than creating videos or images.

With AI writing tools, more and more people and companies can generate content faster and cheaper than hiring a team of writers or spending days and weeks typing away. However, Google has consistently said it doesn’t care who or what writes the content; they only care if it answers the reader’s questions.

This is the backbone of their E.E.A.T. formula that guides their web page ranking system. If you (or your AI-generated article) can show you have experience, expertise, authority, and trustworthiness, then they will rank your article.

Just like always, if people stay on your page and engage, Google will rank your stuff higher, AI or human.

The real question is whether people will start to trust AI answers when they type in questions. That’s the future of SEO — or lack thereof.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t trust what AI writes if I want to know something specific. I go to a web page and read real information (or what I hope is real). And as for now, I think that is the future. People will use AI for some things but fully trust it for recommendations or advice without verification… I’m not so sure.

The Perfect Blend: Combining Human Writers and AI for the Best Content

This brings us back to needing to create better articles faster with AI. The answer to the question, “Should I be creating AI content or human content?” is you need to use both in all your articles.

While the human touch is essential in crafting articles that resonate with readers, the efficiency of AI in incorporating the maximum number of SEO keywords cannot be overlooked. To create the best SEO content, it's crucial to balance human writers' strengths and AI writing tools.

My advice: Get AI to write the bulk of your content to save time, but then go in and add the human connection piece that gets readers to engage. This second part is absolutely crucial because people are already getting better at recognizing what is AI-written and what is human-written. And as soon as they suspect they are just reading regurgitated AI fluff, they’ll click off.

So What’s the Future of SEO? Will AI Replace SEO Content Writers?

For now, AI content generators serve as valuable tools for human content writers, helping us to brainstorm and create content more quickly and at a lower cost to our clients.

But what does the future hold? When does a personality simulation evolve into something more? How far will we go to save time and energy, and, more importantly, how far should we go?

Who knows…

The evolution of AI writing is happening at an alarming rate (hence why Elon Musk and others are wanting to implement a moratorium on AI invention and establish a set of ground rules so humanity doesn’t end up with a Terminator/Cyberdyne Systems/Skynet situation), and there’s really no telling how far and how fast it will go.

But what I do know is that if you want to be in the SEO game now and have a chance at making some money before whatever the next AI thing is comes down the pipe, you need to use tools like ZimmWriter, ChatGPT, Jasper, SurferSEO, NeurOn and anything else that can help you create content fast while solving Google’s EEAT ranking conundrum, so you can get the clicks and engagement you need.

Rememeber: the old adage of quality over quantity still applies. One great article that ranks pays for 1000 ones that don’t. Don’t just “write” 1000 articles and hope that one of them hits. Learn the basics of SEO and stick to them. There’s no sense in changing what has been working for years. Keep cranking out quality content that people want to read, and you’ll eventually come out on top (INDMND is now a DR 60!)
