How to Use SurferSEO to Rank Higher On Google

If you're in SEO and not using Surfer, you're screwed

Hello, you budding SEOpreneurs you,

In today's newsletter, I want to discuss using SurferSEO or Neuron to optimize your content for ranking higher on Google.

SurferSEO is one of my all-time favourite tools.

If your content isn't ranking on Google or SERPs, then what's the point?

And to rank your content these days, you need all the help you can get. You basically need a perfect article.

Using SurferSEO or Neuron, you can take your content to the next level and give yourself the best shot at ranking higher on SERPs.

I will teach you how to use SurferSEO or Neuron to get content that ranks higher on SERPs. These tools scan the top-ranking websites with your keywords and give you all the sub-keywords your content should have to rank just as high or higher. By scoring high in SurferSEO or Neuron, Google will know that you have done the research, added secondary keywords, concludes you know what you’re talking about (are an authority), and will rank your content higher.

If you're in the SEO world (and I know you are because you’re reading this newsletter), you need your content to rank on Google and other SERPs to get more traffic > clicks > revenue. SurferSEO or Neuron can help you achieve this goal by providing the necessary information to optimize your content and outrank your competitors.

Most people fail to rank higher on SERPs because they don't take their content to the next level. They post their content and hope people read it, but that's not enough. Google and other SERPs have complex algorithms that decide where content ranks, and the best we can do is include as many keywords as possible.

Neuron has similar features to SurferSEO. I would say that Surfer is the bomb, but Neuron will get the job done in a pinch (and is cheaper).

How To Use SurferSEO or Neuron To Rank Higher

The homepage of SurferSEO shows your websites and sets tasks so you can rank your content as high as possible on Google.

What is SurferSEO?

Surfer SEO (Neuron is basically a cheaper version of Surfer, so anything I say for Surfer mainly applies to Neuron) is a content intelligence platform designed to help writers, content managers, and agencies improve their SEO workflow and achieve higher search engine rankings.

Surfer combines keyword research, content creation, post-publishing optimization, and data analysis into a single, streamlined process. Surfer prioritizes user tasks based on their potential impact by checking thousands of data points and analyzing findings. With a focus on understanding nuanced ranking factors, Surfer aims to make SEO accessible, measurable, and profitable for businesses of all sizes.

How To Use It

Here is the content score section. SurferSEO reads the top-ranking sites that have your keyword and tells you what your article needs if you want it to rank.

  1. Use Content Planner: SurferSEO's Content Planner can help users create an entire content plan with just one click. By factoring in the volume of organic traffic that can be obtained by writing within a specific topic cluster, it can help users choose the most relevant cluster based on their niche and the search intent of their target audience. This is important because meeting the buyer at the right stage of their journey can make or break the conversion process.

  2. Secondary Keywords: The Content Planner also provides secondary keyword opportunities, builds topical relevance for your domain, and references each post's keyword and relative difficulty. Once you've chosen your topic cluster, you can open the Content Editor directly from the Content Planner page and start writing!

  3. Use the Content Editor: To set up a Content Editor on SurferSEO, you must choose the main keyword(s) they want to target and select a SERP location. Using the Content Planner to generate a list of relevant keywords is recommended.

  4. Organic Competitors: This section allows users to select and deselect competitors to influence their guidelines for writing top-quality content. Other important sections to review include Content Structure and Terms.

  5. The Content Score: This live-updating figure reflects how well the article is optimized. The green score (>68) is an excellent target to aim for. SurferSEO offers several ways to share access to a Content Editor, including a shareable link and a Chrome browser add-on for Google Docs. For WordPress users, there is a direct export integration available.

  6. Write In a Separate Doc: I write my content in Google Docs or another word-processing app. Use AI writing tools like Jasper, Zimmwriter, or ChatGPT to speed up this process. Then I paste it into SurferSEO. Usually, the score is pretty low. Then I find creative ways to add in all the keywords and headings to get my score into the 80s or 90s.

  7. Add Human Value: This takes some practice and some writing skills. Remember, Google looks for value. If you add words randomly, your score will increase, but Google won’t like it because you’re not offering value to anyone searching for that keyword. You’re basically keyword stuffing, which is a big no-no.

  8. Naturally Add Keywords: You have to seamlessly blend keywords with writing helpful content. Google will look at your page, read all the right words, see that you are providing value to customers who use their search engine, and rank your site higher than sites that go for value alone.

The Content Editor section of SurferSEO gives you all the main and secondary keywords and how many you need to insert to have the best shot at ranking on Google.

Remember: SEO Has Many Moving Parts

I’d love to tell you that you can just write well-written articles, post them on your website, and people will flock to them. That’s just not the case.

You need to check all of Google’s boxes to get ahead in the rankings: high-quality content, appropriate keywords, backlinks, images, headings, spelling and grammar, fast loading, and everything in Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (EEAT).

But getting as many keywords as possible into your content means your site will pop up in more searches. People don’t all search for the exact keywords. They type in all kinds of variations. You want your site coming up in as many as possible. Surfer and Neuron can help by providing you with all the sub-keywords you must have in your content.

If you want your content to rank higher on SERPs, you need to take advantage of tools like SurferSEO or Neuron. These tools can provide the necessary information to optimize your content and outrank your competitors. Remember to include as many keywords as possible and take your content to the next level.
